Guide 02 of 23
Save a source now, compose it later
Keep a typed bookmark without fetching its origin or spending a publication credit.
Credit-free save
Save for later keeps the URL and your private shelf metadata. Add a title, description, author, content type, opening mode, cover, collections, existing or new tags, favourite state, archive state and private, unlisted or public visibility before Ratdolt ever contacts the source.
The local development Library leaves every curation field editable as a no-persistence product tour, while its action remains disabled and carries no form destination.
- Open Library and expand Save for later.
- Enter a public URL and any useful shelf metadata.
- Choose whether the organization should become the default only for future first-time saves, then save from a configured account. Open Reader or Composer only when you want to compose it.
One bookmark workflow across source types
Library exposes three browser-native intake owners together: Save for later keeps an article or public URL without fetching it, Saved images preserves or uploads an owned bitmap, and PDF workspace opens a device file or guarded public PDF URL locally first. All Materials keeps the same four choices in its always-available + Add menu. No extension or unrelated-tab permission is required.
After saving, All Materials keeps Add/edit bookmark, Collections, Tags and Remove actions with their exact object authority. A web bookmark may move to reversible Trash; an image or account/device PDF names its permanent byte owner and any surviving counterpart before deletion. Instant Preview gives web publications Preview, separately loaded Web, Permanent copy and Highlights views without contacting a provider merely because the organizer opened.
- Choose + Add in All Materials, then choose URL / bookmark, Image, PDF or Research according to the source.
- Use All Materials to edit metadata, collections or tags without replacing source truth or file bytes.
- Open Preview deliberately; use Remove only after reviewing the named reversible or permanent authority.
Categories and remembered saving preferences
The publication shelf exposes All publications, Public, Favorites, Archived and the separate reversible Trash boundary. Public is visibility, Favorite is a personal marker and Archive is shelf placement: the three states remain independent, and the Sharing filter composes with Favorites or Archived instead of rewriting either one.
Remember saving preferences covers favorite, active-versus-archive destination, private/unlisted/public visibility, collections and tags. It affects only a source entering the Library for the first time; a duplicate or trashed URL returns its existing identity without replacing organization.
- Choose Public, Favorites or Archived from the Library sidebar.
- Use Sharing to narrow the current category to Private, Unlisted or Public profile objects.
- Set the five defaults in Save defaults, or select Remember saving preferences while saving a new source.
Automatic routing inside Ratdolt
Browser-native Auto-run rules can match a domain, URL wildcard or bounded safe regular expression whenever a public URL enters Ratdolt. First match wins, and shadowed rules are disclosed.
